Educators in West Alabama tour car factories in hopes of future student job opportunities

BROOKWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) – A group of educators in West Alabama visited several automotive supplier manufacturing facilities in Tuscaloosa County on Monday to educate students about potential post-high school employment opportunities.

West Alabama plant director Donny Jones says the goal is to help high school students find good jobs in the auto industry.

“Our teachers, principals and superintendents are visiting several of our plants today. SMP and LEAR and today we’re at Brookwood High School looking at different programs we have to help kids find these jobs in our area. “

The program called Educator Workforce Academy Tour enables educators to visit assembly lines at LEAR and SMP, both suppliers to Mercedes Benz.

West Alabama Works wants teachers and principals to tell students what they saw and learned so that students can take advantage of the job opportunities if they choose not to attend college.

Tracy Bryan, a teacher at Sumter Central High School, says this program is a great way to help seniors at their school prepare for real jobs in manufacturing.

“We have learned from today that there are opportunities for students like ours who graduate and go straight to work from high school and achieve what they want based on their drive and dreams.”

West Alabama plant director Donny Jones says this is the fourth year of the program. According to Jones, 3,000 new auto manufacturing jobs will be vacant over the next few months.
