Southeastern Travels to Mississippi State for Exhibition Contest
HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer team will see its first action of the 2022 season Sunday with a 1 pm exhibition match at Mississippi State.
Southeastern, which returns 18 letter winners from last season’s roster, will take on a MSU squad that finished 5-8-3 overall and 3-6-1 in Southeastern Conference play. Live stats, provided by the host Bulldogs, from Sunday’s match will be accessible via the soccer schedule page at www.LionSports.net.
First-year SLU head coach Nathan Gillespie has seen growth for his Lady Lions since they reported to campus and is eager to see how it translates when facing a formidable opponent.
“Our team is starting to pick up on the ideas of how we want to play,” Gillespie commented. “We’re really starting to grasp our strategies and tactics and Sunday will be a good test to see where we are as a team and how our newcomers are going to fit in.”
With the regular season opener less than a week away, Gillespie is looking for several things from his Southeastern squad.
“We’ll have a much better idea on what we still need to work on and what we’re doing well that we can build on,” Gillespie said. “We’d like to have a strong defensive effort and gain confidence as we head towards the start of the season.”
Mississippi State not only has the home-pitch advantage, but has the benefit of having already played an exhibition match. MSU handed Samford a 2-0 loss Thursday night, scoring twice in the final minutes to secure the shutout victory.
Southeastern will officially open the 2022 season with a 7 pm contest Aug. 18 at Ole Miss.
