Case update: Arkansas COVID-19 cases increase by 2,544 on Friday, hospital stays by 32

The Arkansas Department of Health announced that Arkansas COVID-19 cases rose by 2,544 on Friday.

Hospital admissions rose 32 Friday, bringing the total number of patients hospitalized in the state to 1,087. There are currently 219 patients in the state on ventilators.

The state also announced 13 new deaths on Friday, bringing the total number of deaths in the state as a result of the pandemic to 6,123.

There are currently 18,541 cases of COVID-19 in the state that are considered active, including those that have tested positive by both PCR and antigen testing methods. That number has increased more than ten times the amount reported on June 7, when active cases briefly fell below 1,600. The ADH dashboard currently lists 1,273 active cases in Washington County and 1,406 in Benton County.

8,014 PCR tests and 2,381 antigen tests were announced on Friday.

The new cases bring the cumulative total in Arkansas since the pandemic started to 385,113.

The state announced that 9,436 additional doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were given, bringing the total number of doses administered by the state to 2,332,296. The state lists 302,110 as partially immunized and 1,056,447 people as fully immunized.

Arkansas continues to lag behind the rest of the country when it comes to vaccinations. Arkansas ranks 48th, according to the New York Times vaccine tracker, with only 36% of the population reported as fully vaccinated.

Arkansas has averaged 1,829 new cases per day, or 61 per 100,000 population, for the past two weeks. The state currently ranks third worst among states in the per 100,000 category at the time, according to the Times. Cases in the state have increased 144% in the past 14 days.

By comparison, Vermont – which has at least partially vaccinated nearly 75% of its population – reports only about 30 new cases per day, or five per 100,000 residents.

All Arkansans 12 and over are currently eligible for a vaccine.

The top counties for new cases on Friday were Pulaski (447), Benton (225) and Washington (189).
