New York, Louisiana suspect found with illegal drug in Ohio

FREEDOM, Twp., Ohio (WKBN) — Three New Yorkers and one Louisiana person will be charged after deputies from the Portage County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle on I-80 in Freedom Township Tuesday.

According to a Facebook post from the sheriff’s office, the Portage Aggressive Crime Enforcement (PACE) Unit found $5,600 in cash and a substance suspected to be khat at the traffic stop.

Deputies said khat contains an illegal controlled substance, and the amount seized in that traffic stop is three times the bulk amount in the entire state of Ohio. MEPs said abusers of the substance claim the effects can be similar to those of cocaine or methamphetamine and the potential side effects are extremely dangerous.

The substance is sent to BCI for further analysis. According to the results, charges of drug trafficking, drug possession and criminal proceeds will be filed, the sheriff’s office said.
