Cenla Mardi Gras events are coming up

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) – With the Mardi Gras season in full swing, the Mardi Gras events are upon us for residents of central Louisiana.

Events begin in Pineville with the city’s “Night of Lights” Mardi Gras Parade, which rolls down Main Street on February 10 at 7:00 p.m

The fun continues across the river the following weekend:

The Classic Cars and College Cheerleaders Parade will be held on February 17 at 4:30 p.m. with Peabody basketball coach Charles Smith as the Grand Marshal. The Taste of Mardi Gras follows the parade from 7:00 p.m. in downtown Alexandria.

The children’s parade will take place on February 18 at 10 am. The Grand Marshal is Mary Laura Hunt, the Miss Louisiana Outstanding Teen 2022.

At the end of the events, the Krewes Parade will take place on February 19 at 2 p.m. Mr. Mardi Gras Chris Chelette will serve as Grand Marshal alongside Miss Louisiana 2022 Gracie Reichman.

“Our parades will always be a great time,” said Chelette, who is serving in his 15th and final year as president of the Alexandria Mardi Gras Association.

Chelette said unlike New Orleans or other Mardi Gras celebrations across the state, the local events are tailored for a more family-oriented atmosphere.

“We’re trying to create a family-friendly environment that you’re happy to bring your kids to, but they still get the Mardi Gras experience,” Chelette said.

Whether it’s king cakes, parades, parties or strings of beads, Chelette said what’s so special about Mardi Gras season is finding your own way to celebrate Mardi Gras.

“That’s one of the unique things about carnival time,” Chelette said. “I think you can tweak it in your own way and make it how it’s special to you and you keep it that way.”
